Christmas Markets 2025 – Day 5 (Vipiteno, Italy)

We took the train from Salzburg, up and over the mountains into Italy, stopping in Vipiteno, which is in South Tyrol. We spent a few hours in Vipiteno before heading on to Verona. Vipiteno was super charming and quaint.

It’s a very tiny town, with a very tiny train station, and one main square. There was a bit of snow on the ground, and a few patches in the nearby hillsides, but evidently there’s skiing nearby, as we saw some folks toting skiis. They have a small Christmas Market in the town square. Allison found a handmade egg ornament that she loved. The market was definitely more handmade than mass produced, which was nice.

We had a nice dinner at the Schwarzer Adler restaurant, that’s part of the Schwarzer Adler Hotel. It was pretty cold out, so a nice hot bowl of tortellini en brodo hit the spot.

Fun With Trains

We tried to leave on an earlier train than planned, as it was still 3 more hours to Verona. We had originally planned to take the 5:27 train. I asked the woman at the train station if there’s an earlier train to Verona, and she said “4:56, platform 3”. I took her word for it, and we boarded the 4:56 train on platform 3. Once the train was underway, I quickly realized we were on the wrong train. This train wasn’t going to/through Verona at all. I used my Google Fu to find a train at one of the intermediate stops that would take us to Verona. We got off at Brixon, where there would be a 5:55 train to Verona. Unfortunately, the train was delayed by almost an hour (56 minutes, to be exact). By the time we got to the VRBO in Verona, it was 10pm, and we were pretty wiped out.
